Grant Research and Grant Writing Seminars

There are thousands of foundations in the US that provide financial support to worthy causes. The challenge for any non-profit organization is to find out which ones will support their cause in their community.

The Wayne County Public Library and the Wayne County Community Foundation are sponsoring several Grant Research and Grant Writing Seminars to assist you in using the Foundation Center's Co-operative Collection located in the reference department of the Main Library located at 220 W. Liberty Street.

While registration is open to all Wayne County Library card holders, preference will be given to those representing Wayne County non-profit organizations because the vast majority of grants awarded by foundations are not directly given to individuals.

Two 4-hour sessions will show participants how to use the Foundation Center's Co-operative Collection to locate grant-makers (Session One) and how to write a grant request (Session Two). Participants must complete Session One before Session Two.

Applicants must be able to use a computer. No more than two applicants from the same non-profit organization may apply for the same session. Sessions begin promptly in the Library Conference room. Class size is limited to 20 per session.

Session One - Grant Research

  • To provide an overview of private and public foundations and their grant making capabilities.
  • To demonstrate how to sue grant maker databases to locate potential donors for your grant request.
  • To review resources available to further enhance your grant researching capabilities.
  • To assist writers in developing initial contacts with potential grantors.

Session Two - Grant Writing

  • To define the difference between pro-active and passive grant opportunities.
  • To demonstrate the basic steps for writing a pro-active and passive grant request.
  • To review grant writing resources to further enhance your grant writing skills.
  • To assist writers in building relationships with potential grantors.
